Bats in the Library?

A book-lover’s dream would surely be to own their own library...

Think of it - all your favourite books; all the books you’ve ever read; all the books you intend to read. You collect them, arrange them and get yourself a nice comfortable chair, preferably in the sun.

BUT

What if your library is infested with insects who suddenly appear and begin to devour the pages of your precious collection?

This was the problem faced by the beautiful 300 year old library at the National Palace of Mafra, just north of Lisbon.

Nobody knows who had the bright idea, but the library has welcomed a colony of bats there for the past few centuries.

The bats spend their days sleeping in the bookshelves or in the palace gardens, but when night falls, they swoop into the library and gobble up all the nasties who have arrived during the day (mostly flies, gnats and mosquitoes) before they have a chance to damage the books, some of which date back to the 14th Century.

Unfortunately the bats arrive after the library has shut, so hopeful visitors who have come to see the flying mammals are usually disappointed. Even more unfortunate is the mess the bats leave all over the floor which has to be cleaned up every morning before the library opens.

So before you send out invitations to the local bat community, it might be worth weighing up the pros and cons!

If your library needs a great new book I have a suggestion – It’s Raining in Moscow and I Forgot my Umbrella is available on Amazon. 😊

Two thrilling stories, full of twists, turns and cliff-hangers run side by side until the final astonishing link is revealed.
