Grandpa's Postcard

We are nearly at the end of the school year and I have one more winning 500 word story for you.

This time Arissa has used the phrase "It's Raining in Moscow and I Forgot my Umbrella" in another very different way. Enjoy reading her exciting tale.

Grandpa's Postcard

I went to the front door to get the mail and I found a new postcard from Grandpa. Finally! I’ve been waiting for another one.

It said, “It’s raining in Moscow and I forgot my umbrella!” I knew what this meant: when Grandpa and I used to go for walks and we’d forgotten our umbrella when it started raining, he would say, “It's raining and we forgot our umbrellas!” This meant we were in trouble with mum and grandma.

My heart raced up and down and up and down, I had to tell Mum. And imagine how Grandma would feel? What if they didn’t listen? What if they didn’t believe me? I might as well try.

I walked into the lounge and saw mum reading her book and dad staring at the TV.

“M-m-mum, d-dad?” I stammered.

“Yes Sammy?” Mum replied. Gosh I hate it when she calls me that.

“Well because of this letter, I think Grandpa’s in trouble.” I announced.

“In trouble!” laughed Mum, “Grandpa couldn’t be in trouble, let me see that.”

She snatched the postcard from my hand and read it aloud so the neighbours could hear her.

“It’s raining in Moscow and I forgot my umbrella! Hah! Very funny Samuel!”

I was furious! I wish I could tell them everything, but then it wouldn’t be a secret code anymore.

“Oh, my dear Joseph is always forgetting his umbrella!” Grandma said as she walked into the room.

“The boy’s just trying to have a little fun, aren’t ya Sam?" Dad suggested.

“Yeah, of course,” I murmured, “I have to make a call quickly. See you at lunch!” Then I ran upstairs and called for help.

“He does know it is lunch, right?” Mum mentioned.

“Of course I can help!” Jack laughed “And that is an awesome plan!”

Yes finally, someone who believes me! “Alright I’ve sorted out the flight so all we need is the money but don’t worry, that is already sorted.” I grinned.

Now that everyone was asleep, I crept into Mum and Dad’s room and took Mum’s purse, took out her credit card, then took out my phone and then put her credit card number in. YES! Two flights booked for tomorrow.

I came downstairs and told Mum and Dad that a camping trip at school had been booked at the last minute and that I had to leave now. So, I ran to the airport where I met Jack,

“What did you tell them?” I asked.

“That I was going to Moscow.” He joked. “Ha ha very funny.” I said sarcastically.

After a long flight, we got to Moscow! I had absolutely no intention of checking into a hotel so the first thing I did was go to the hotel that grandpa was staying in. The place was TRASHED! I didn’t know what to do so I left, hopelessly. The next thing I know I’m being smuggled into a car...

“Hello?” I faintly see people sitting opposite me. Wait one minute, “GRANDPA!”

THE END

Well done Arissa. This is a fabulous idea – a secret code on a postcard. I could feel the frustration as the Sam tries to make his family understand. A cleverly thought out story, and I want to know what happens next!
