When I wrote It's Raining in Moscow and I Forgot my Umbrella, the character Dmitri Molchalin was a complex one and although he is rather wicked, I couldn't help liking him.
When it came to the second book, The Fox of Sevastopol (to be published later this year) I had to decide, once and for all, whether he was good or bad. The only way to do this was to delve into his past. I started writing a 'character profile', but found I'm not very good at clinical appraisals of characters who have become real to me, so I decided to write his back story.
Wow! I had no idea he'd had such a difficult time growing up! This might sound strange, but my fictional Mr Molchalin almost wrote his own story. He just popped into my head and said, "Listen to my secret young life and you'll see why I turned out like this!"
And I did see. So Dmitri's back story has turned into a short story, The Secret Young Life of Dmitri Molchalin - (click here to read it) which I hope you will enjoy. Maybe you'll enjoy it so much you'll want to find out what happens to him in "It's Raining in Moscow and I Forgot my Umbrella" and that would make me very happy!
For those lovely people who have already read It's Raining in Moscow and I Forgot my Umbrella I have some news: I've just re-published it with significant changes. If you would like me to send the new version (and you have read the first) please get in touch and I'll send it to you.
Finally another gift - the recipe for Manya's Dribble Cake. Yum! Click here for full details.
